We’re so delighted to welcome back ROSL alumni Michael Foyle (2013 Strings Section Winner) and his ensemble, Trio Balthasar.

Trio Balthasar is a new chamber group. Committed to imaginative, diverse programming, they explore established classics of the piano trio repertoire next to less familiar work. 

Since their launch at Wigmore Hall in 2022 they have appeared at the Harrogate International Festival, the Rye Festival, Petworth Festival and the Kirker Music Festival on Ischia. The name Balthasar was initially suggested as a homage to the German baroque architect Balthasar Neumann, and with Balthasar also the name of one of the Wise Men in the Nativity story, there developed the idea of three men on a journey, bearing gifts. Each member of the Trio Balthasar has been praised for their vivacity, emotional depth and breathtaking playing.

Ian Burnside piano, is an internationally acclaimed collaborative pianist,  with over sixty recordings covering a wide range of repertoire, including the Gramophone Award-winning NMC Songbook. He is Artistic Director of the Ludlow English Song Weekend, a regular performer at Wigmore Hall, and has curated innovative programmes for festivals worldwide. Also an award-winning broadcaster, Burnside is known for his dramatic concert projects and teaches widely, including at the Guildhall School, where he has a long-standing association.

Michael Foyle violin, winner of our 2013 ROSL Strings Award further launched his career by winning The Netherlands Violin Competition in 2016 and soon after made his Concertgebouw debut. He has since performed at major venues including Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Buckingham Palace, appeared as concerto soloist with leading orchestras, and given recitals at festivals worldwide. His acclaimed recordings include the complete Beethoven Sonatas, and he is Professor of Violin at the Royal Academy of Music (its youngest ever appointee) and at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne.

Tim Hugh cello, is one of the most dynamic cellists of his generation, won two medals including the Bach Prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition and has performed with many of Europe’s leading orchestras under conductors such as Boulez, Haitink, Rostropovich, and Solti. Since 1995 he has been Principal Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, with whom he has frequently appeared as soloist. His acclaimed recordings range from Bach’s Suites and Beethoven’s Sonatas to concertos by Britten, Finzi and Walton.

By Tube

ROSL’s closest tube station is Green Park. Take exit marked Piccadilly, walk past the Ritz Hotel, and turn right onto Arlington Street. At the end of Arlington Street there are some steps, go down these steps and turn right where you will find the entrance courtyard to Over-Seas House.

By Bus

The following buses stop outside Green Park tube station on Piccadilly: numbers C2, 9, 14, 19, 22 and 38, running west to Hyde Park Corner, Victoria and Knightsbridge, and east to Piccadilly Circus and Holborn.

By Car

Travelling west on the A4 (Piccadilly), turn left onto St James’s Street and second right into Park Place cul-de-sac, Over-Seas House is at the end. If there is no space in the Over-Seas car park, alternative parking may be found in the NCP Car Park on Arlington Street off Piccadilly.
