About This Event

Concert in Association with the Medical Musical Society of London

We’re delighted to welcome back our 2024 ROSL Annual Music Competition Ensemble Section Winners Trio Archai and Apollo’s Cabinet, for this special double feature recital.

Apollo’s Cabinet, winners of the 2024 ROSL Mixed Ensembles Prize offer a signature mix of evocative and story driven programmes to bring historical performance to modern audiences. Expect music about Murders, drinking songs, Cinderella stories, European tours as well as serene polyphony and candlelit rituals in a exciting beginning to the evening.

Programme:

During the 18th century, music and medicine were closely connected and the effects of music on the body and soul started being researched. Essays like medicina musica and reflections on the power of music were some of the first to discuss a scientific approach to music as therapy, but there also was a general fascination amongst musicians and composers. Marin Marais wrote a piece based on his own gallbladder operation, Thomas D’Urfey aimed to create a musical antidote for depression and in Italy, dancing a Tarantella was said to heal spider bites.

Jan Dismas Zelenka – Hypocondria: Grave – Allegro – Lentement

Marin Marais- L’Operation de la Taille

Marin Marais, Arcangelo Corelli, Antonio Vivaldi, Francesco Geminiani: La Follia

Michael Maier Atalanta Fugiens – Alchemical Fugues: Embryo Vento – Romolus – Setz dem Weib die Kröte an die Brust

Athanasius Kirchner, Italian Traditional, Niccolo Paganini – Curative Tarantellas

Scottish Traditional – Roused from Depression: The Lass of Peatie’s Mill

Thomas D’urfey – Pills to purge Melancholy: Corelli’s Jig

Trio Archai, winners of the 2024 ROSL String and Keyboard Ensembles Prize, were founded in Switzerland are rapidly building momentum in their home cities of Basel and London. They will perform Schubert’s Piano Trio No 1 in B flat, D898 to bring the evening to a beautiful close.

Programme:
