Singers Prize awarded in 2024 Annual Music Competition

22 February 2024

Earlier this year, Welsh tenor Dafydd Jones took home the highly contested Singers Prize, taking home £5,000 and the second of our four soloists who will proceed to the Gold Medal Final, which will take place at Wigmore Hall in June.

In this second week of the live rounds of the 2024 Royal Over-Seas League’s Annual Music Competition, four soloists competed in the Singers section final. Armand Rabot baritone, Madeline Boreham soprano, Felicitas Wrede soprano and Dafydd Jones tenor delighted the gathered audience in the Princess Alexandra Hall. The adjudicators Mhairi Lawson, Geoff Parkin, Amanda Roocroft and Samir Savant were given the task of selecting the night’s winner and the soloist who will go onto compete for the Gold Medal and a further £15,000.

Dafydd Jones was chosen as the Section Final Winner and was awarded the ROSL Singers Prize, singing a mixture lied, song and opera to impress the judges and audience alike. Welsh tenor, Dafydd Jones, is an Aldama scholar studying with Nicky Spence and Caroline Dowdle at the Royal College of Music International Opera Studio. Dafydd is a Samling Artist and made his international opera debut as Clotarco in Haydn’s Armida at the Bregenzer Festspiele last season and has just performed the title role in Albert Herring for Opera North. Dafydd was joined onstage by pianist Francesca Lauri for the evening.

This year, ROSL has continued to partner with Making Music to offer our section final winners the chance to join the Philip & Dorothy Green Young Artist Award (PDGYA) for one year. As winner of the Wind and Brass Section Final, Dafydd will be featured in the new Recommended Artist Guide, and have the opportunity to be booked for performances with Making Music’s member promoters.
