Burns Night Supper

Following the publication of an expanded edition of his poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, in Edinburgh in the spring of 1787, Robert Burns set off on a series of journeys around Scotland. He travelled first through the Borders on his mare, Jenny Geddes, making a brief excursion into England. He later journeyed by post chaise with his friend Willie Nicol through the Highlands, travelling as far as Inverness. Along the way, Burns met many characters, including fiddlers Neil Gow and William Marshall, the Duke of Atholl and the Duke and Duchess of Gordon. He also collected tunes and fragments of verse that would provide material for the 300 plus songs he wrote during his final years in Dumfries.

Every year, Burns Night is celebrated in Scotland and abroad to mark Robert Burns’ unique contribution to Scottish culture and history. This Burns Night, join us as we follow the poet’s travels and hear poems, piping and fiddle music inspired by the places he visited and the people he met. Together, we will commemorate the life of Scotland’s most beloved bard, poet and lyricist with a bespoke Scottish menu, fine wines and a wee dram.

The first Burns supper was held in July 1801 when nine of Burns’ close friends got together to mark the fifth anniversary of their friend’s death. Taking place at Burns Cottage in Alloway, the night included a tasty meal (haggis, of course), performances of Burns’ work, and a speech in honour of the great Bard (now known as the Immortal Memory).
